Eighteenth-century Kashi Naresh palace across the Ganga — sandstone walls, vintage cars, and a museum of royal oddities.
The palace that watched the ghats from the other bank
Ramnagar Fort rises on the Ganga's eastern shore — sandstone bastions, carved balconies, and the still-active residence of the Kashi Naresh. Built in the eighteenth century by Balwant Singh, it faces the cremation fires of Manikarnika across the water: life and death framed between two banks. Heritage here is royal and theatrical — vintage cars, palanquins, an astronomical clock that still ticks if the guide winds it right.
Museum rooms and royal residue
The museum inside the fort is wonderfully uneven — elephant howdahs beside old American sedans, swords beside silver hookahs. Do not expect modern curation; expect the attic of a dynasty that survived colonial pressure by negotiating ritual authority over Kashi. Our docuseries crosses by boat at dawn so the fort appears as a silhouette before the city wakes — a reminder that Banaras was also a kingdom, not only a tirtha.
Ramlila and the autumn stage
During Dussehra, Ramnagar's Ramlila stretches over weeks — performances move through courtyards and fields, drawing villagers and scholars alike. If you visit off-season, the fort is quieter: pigeons in the arches, the river audible from the terrace. Combine with a Ganges boat ride that loops toward the eastern bank before returning to Dashashwamedh.
Crossing back to the old city
Return by boat before dark if you came on the water — currents shift after sunset. The fort does not replace ghat pilgrimage, but it completes the map: priests and kings, ash and silk, all naming the same river from opposite sides.
Visitor tips
- Reach by boat from [Dashashwamedh Ghat](/destinations/varanasi/attractions/dashashwamedh-ghat) or road bridge via Ramnagar — boat is the classic approach
- The museum collection is eclectic — royal carriages, weapons, astronomical clocks — allow ninety minutes
- Ramlila performances during Dussehra transform the fort into a stage; book accommodation early if visiting then
