Sankat Mochan Temple

mokshTemples

Hanuman's southern sanctuary — bells, ladoo prasad, and Tuesday crowds that spill into the lanes near Assi.

Hanuman at the edge of the old city's breath

Sankat Mochan — remover of troubles — names a Hanuman temple where bells never fully stop. Founded in lore by Tulsidas, the shrine sits on the road between Assi Ghat and the university quarter, drawing Tuesday crowds that turn the lane into a river of saffron. Moksh pillar threads run through Hanuman's service to Rama, but the immediate feeling is simpler: people arrive worried and leave carrying ladoo prasad, sugar bright on the tongue.

Darshan, prasad, and Tuesday's surge

The sanctum is compact; darshan lines coil through the courtyard on peak days. Priests accept offerings of flowers and sindoor; the famous ladoos sell from counters faster than you can count change. Our docuseries records the soundscape — conch, bell, the repeated name "Sankat Mochan Hanuman" — because audio here carries devotion more honestly than any wide shot.

Tulsidas and the Ramayana quarter

Walk to Tulsi Manas Temple to read the epic on marble walls, then return here for the god Tulsidas praised most ardently. Durga Temple completes a southern triangle of shrines distinct from the Vishwanath corridor. Allow a morning without rushing — these temples reward repetition.

From troubles to the river

After darshan, descend to Assi for Subah-e-Banaras or a quiet sit on the steps. Hanuman's mythology is movement — leaping oceans, carrying mountains — but the practice here is stillness offered to a god who answers distress. That pairing of active legend and patient queue is pure Kashi.

Visitor tips

  • Tuesdays draw the largest crowds — arrive before 8 AM if you want a shorter queue
  • Ladoo prasad from the counter is part of the ritual; eat or carry respectfully
  • Bags may be checked near the entrance during festivals
  • Combine with [Tulsi Manas Temple](/destinations/varanasi/attractions/tulsi-manas-temple) on the same road
