Ayodhya does not keep the Ramayana in books alone — it maps episodes onto hills, courtyards, and ghats you can walk in a morning. The Ramayana circuit is not a single signed trail but a sequence locals still repeat: guardian deity first, birthplace second, household shrines third, river last. Our recommended loop strings Hanuman Garhi, Ram Mandir, Kanak Bhawan, and Nageshwarnath Temple before you descend to the Saryu. Heritage and ritual share the same pavement.

What a half-day includes

Expect four to five hours with breaks — longer if you queue during festival season. Rickshaws bridge gaps for elders; fit walkers can cover the core three kilometres on foot through Tulsi Nagar lanes. Guides narrate Kush founding Nageshwarnath, Kaikeyi's gift at Kanak Bhawan, and Hanuman's vigil on the hill. Without a guide, use the walk as quiet orientation: note where Tulsi Smarak Bhawan sits for a literary detour another afternoon.

Best season and pace

October to March offers walkable mornings; April heat argues for a 5 AM start. Carry water — temple complexes rarely sell bottles inside gates. Lunch at Kanak Bhawan Area Eateries fits the route geographically. Save Guptar Ghat and Mani Parvat for a second day if your knees protest the hill steps.

Evening extension

Return to the river for Saryu Evening Aarti after resting at your hotel — the walk's narrative closes when lamps meet water, echoing how the epic itself ends at the Sarayu.
